Twenty-eight nations have now secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with October's international window delivering the latest wave of qualifiers as the race for the remaining 20 berths at the expanded 48-team tournament intensifies. The newest additions include England, the first European nation to qualify, followed by 1998 and 2018 champions France, along with Ivory Coast, Saudi Arabia, Senegal and South Africa.

Africa's contingent is now complete at nine teams: Algeria, Cape Verde, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia all punched their tickets, making the continent one of the first to finish its qualifying campaign. Asia's eight direct qualifiers, Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Uzbekistan, are also settled, with Japan having booked the first non-host ticket all the way back in March.

The hosts Canada, Mexico and the United States were always in, while South America's six automatic spots went to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay. Defending champions Argentina qualified in March alongside New Zealand, who claimed Oceania's single guaranteed berth. It is a lineup that already blends traditional powers with fresh faces, and England's strong form suggests Europe's champions-elect could arrive as genuine contenders.

October also produced one of the tournament's great stories, with Cape Verde booking a first-ever World Cup appearance. The Atlantic island nation joins Jordan and Uzbekistan, who qualified in June, as confirmed debutants, giving the expanded 48-team format exactly the kind of new narratives FIFA hoped for when it widened the field.

There is still plenty to play for. Europe has 16 teams heading into a playoff gauntlet in March for four more spots, while the intercontinental playoff in Mexico will decide two further places. CONCACAF's direct qualification places, beyond the three hosts, are also still to be resolved, meaning the full 48-team picture will not be final until the spring.

With the tournament opener set for June 11, 2026, the countdown is now measured in months rather than years. The qualified list will keep growing through March, and as the World Cup 2026 storylines take shape, the focus shifts from who makes it to who can actually win it.
