One of the smartest ways to see more of the 2026 World Cup without spending a fortune on flights is to base yourself on the East Coast, where three host cities, Boston, New York New Jersey and Philadelphia, are linked by one of the busiest rail corridors in North America. Trains on this route are frequent, city-centre to city-centre, and far less stressful than flying, with no airport security queues and no baggage restrictions to worry about. For fans who want to see several matches in different cities, the train is often the best tool in the trip.

This guide explains how the East Coast rail corridor works for World Cup fans, how to plan journeys around matchdays, and when flying still makes more sense. It focuses on practicalities: journey times, booking tips and the matchday details that turn a good rail trip into a great one.

The distances between Boston, New York and Philadelphia are ideal for rail: Boston to New York takes around three and a half to four hours by train, and New York to Philadelphia around an hour and a quarter, both city-centre to city-centre. Compare that with flying, where airport transfers, security and boarding can easily consume three hours before the flight itself, and the train often wins on total journey time as well as on comfort. Trains also run late enough for most evening matches, and stations are usually far closer to stadiums and fan zones than airports are.

Rail travel has other advantages for football fans. There are no liquid restrictions, no tight baggage limits and no risk of a missed connection stranding you in an airport on matchday. You can watch highlights on your phone, check live scores and plan the next leg of your trip from your seat, and groups travelling together can sit together and talk through the match they have just seen. For a tournament that rewards flexible, multi-city itineraries, the train fits the way fans actually travel better than any other form of transport.

A classic East Coast itinerary starts in Boston, where matches are played at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, south of the city, and then moves south to New York New Jersey, home of the MetLife Stadium and the final, before finishing in Philadelphia, where matches are played at Lincoln Financial Field. Each city has its own character: Boston offers history and a compact, walkable centre; New York offers scale and spectacle; Philadelphia offers passionate sports fans and a stadium district that is easy to navigate on matchdays.

The practical key is to book accommodation near a main station in each city, so that matchday travel and onward journeys are both simple. In Boston, that means staying near South Station; in New York, near Penn Station; and in Philadelphia, near 30th Street Station. From each station, local transport or shuttle buses cover the final leg to the stadium, and on non-matchdays the same stations open up day trips to smaller towns along the corridor. Allow a full day for each move between cities, and try to avoid travelling on the morning of a match if you can.

Train tickets on the East Coast corridor come in several classes and fare types, and prices generally rise as departure approaches, so booking early is the single best way to save money. Faster express services cost more than regional trains but save an hour or more on the Boston to New York leg, which can matter on a tight matchday schedule. Check the timetable carefully for late matches, because the last train of the day may leave before a night match finishes, in which case an overnight stay near the stadium city is the safer plan.

For journeys beyond the East Coast cluster, flying usually makes more sense: the distances to Dallas, Los Angeles, Mexico City or Vancouver are far too long for rail in a tournament timeframe. The best approach is to combine the two: use trains within a cluster of nearby cities, and fly between clusters. That way you get the comfort and simplicity of rail where it works best, and the speed of flying where it is genuinely needed, keeping your World Cup trip affordable, flexible and free of unnecessary airport days.
