The 2026 World Cup is not just bigger — it is structured differently from every World Cup before it. For the first time, 48 teams will compete in 104 matches over 39 days. If you are used to the old 32-team format, here is the new system explained simply.

48 teams, 12 groups of four

The 48 qualified teams are drawn into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three group matches, just like before, but there are now 72 group-stage games instead of 48. The group stage runs from June 11 to late June, with matches spread across all 16 host cities. The draw took place in December 2025, and the groups are already set — including Group B, where Canada, Switzerland, Qatar and a European playoff winner will meet.

Who advances: the new Round of 32

Here is the big change. The top two teams in each group advance, as before — but so do the eight best third-placed teams. That means 32 teams reach the knockout stage, which now starts with a Round of 32 instead of a Round of 16. For fans, that is great news: more knockout football, more drama, and a much better chance your team survives the group. For teams, it means even a third-place finish can keep the dream alive.

The knockout path to the Final

From the Round of 32, it is single elimination all the way: winners advance, losers go home. The Round of 32 is followed by the Round of 16, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals in Dallas and Atlanta, the third-place play-off in Miami on July 18, and the Final at MetLife Stadium on July 19. In total, the tournament has 104 matches — 40 more than the old format — which is why it lasts 39 days and spans three countries.

What the new format means for fans

More teams means more stories: debutant nations, returning giants, and minnows with a genuine chance of a knockout run. It also means more matches in every host city, so your base city will have more football to see. But it also means a more complex schedule — keep an eye on which third-placed teams advance, because the Round of 32 match-ups are only decided once the group stage ends. If your team finishes third, do not book your flight home early.

The favourites in the new format

The expanded format slightly favours the big teams, who now have a safety net if they stumble in the group. But the extra knockout round also creates more chances for upsets — a single bad day can now end a favourite's tournament a round earlier than before. Expect the usual names at the sharp end, but do not be surprised if a team nobody predicted reaches the quarter-finals. That is the fun of 48 teams.

Frequently asked questions

The draw: how the groups were decided

The Final draw took place in December 2025, seeding teams by FIFA ranking and geography so that no group contains two teams from the same confederation, except Europe. The draw also decided which cities host which groups, which is why fans now know exactly where their team plays. If you are still deciding where to base yourself, the draw is your bible: find your team's group, find its three cities, and plan around them. The full schedule is on FIFA.com, and it is worth printing out.

How many teams are at World Cup 2026? 48, up from 32. How many groups? 12 groups of four. How many teams reach the knockouts? 32 — the top two in each group plus the eight best third-placed teams. How many matches in total? 104. When is the Final? July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium.
