Estadio Azteca is sacred ground in world football: the only stadium to have hosted two World Cup finals, the stage for some of the most famous goals in history, and the venue for the opening match of the 2026 tournament. For visiting fans, it is also a serious logistical challenge, because it sits in the south of a vast, high-altitude megacity, far from the tourist centre. With the right preparation, though, a match at Azteca is the single most historic experience available at this World Cup.

Azteca, now also known by its sponsored name, has a capacity of around 87,000, making it the largest stadium of the tournament. It hosted the finals of 1970 and 1986, and generations of fans associate it with legendary performances that are still replayed today. The atmosphere for big matches is intense, passionate and loud, with Mexican supporters creating a wall of noise that visiting fans never forget. If you have the chance to attend the opening match here, take it: opening games at a World Cup carry a unique ceremony and energy that no other fixture quite matches.

One factor every visitor must respect is altitude. Mexico City sits more than 2,200 metres above sea level, and visitors arriving from sea level can feel breathless, tired or headachy for the first day or two. Arrive at least a day before your match if you can, drink plenty of water, avoid heavy alcohol on arrival day, and take it easy on your first afternoon. Most people adjust quickly, but planning a relaxed first day makes a real difference to your matchday enjoyment.

Azteca is in the Santa Ursula neighbourhood in the south of the city, and the journey from central areas like Roma Norte, Condesa or the Historic Centre takes time. The light rail from Tasquena to Xochimilco, with a stop near the stadium, is a popular option, but it is crowded on matchdays, so allow generous time. Official shuttle buses and rideshares are alternatives, but traffic around the stadium is heavy, and return journeys after the match can be slow. Whatever you choose, agree your return plan before you enter the stadium, and keep your group together.

Safety in Mexico City is about sensible precautions rather than fear: use official taxis or rideshares, avoid displaying expensive jewellery or large amounts of cash, stay in well-lit busy areas at night, and keep your phone and wallet secure in crowds. The tourist neighbourhoods of Roma Norte, Condesa and Polanco are good bases, with excellent food, parks and metro access. Drink bottled water, eat at busy reputable restaurants, and carry a small amount of cash in pesos alongside your card.

Buy tickets only through official FIFA channels, and be especially careful with opening-match tickets, which are among the most counterfeited in world football. Check the stadium bag policy and prohibited items list in advance, as rules are strict and security screening is thorough. Seating at Azteca is steep in places, so if you have mobility concerns, check accessible seating options when you book, and choose seats with easier access to exits and facilities.

Food inside the stadium is part of the experience, with local snacks and drinks widely available, but queues are long before kickoff, so eat before you arrive if you want a proper meal. Sun protection matters: afternoon matches at altitude mean strong sun, so bring sunscreen and a hat, and carry water for the journey to and from the stadium. Mobile signal can be weak with a full crowd, so screenshot your ticket and transport details before you set off.

Give Mexico City at least two or three days if you can: the Historic Centre with the Zocalo and the National Palace, the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacan, the Chapultepec Park and its museums, and the food markets are all world-class. Street food is superb, from tacos to tamales, but choose busy stalls with high turnover. The city has a metro system that is cheap and extensive, though crowded at peak times, and rideshares fill the gaps comfortably. A match at Azteca, combined with a few days exploring one of the world's great cities, is a trip that will stay with you for life.
