Ticket resale is where most World Cup fans lose money or lose their seat, so understanding the rules before you buy is worth more than any bargain you might find. The official position is simple: FIFA's own resale platform is the authorised secondary market for the tournament, and tickets bought anywhere else carry a real risk of cancellation without refund. That single fact should shape every resale decision you make, however tempting an unofficial offer looks. This guide walks through the official platform, the country differences, the guest-versus-transfer distinction and the most common scams, so you can buy or sell with confidence rather than hope.

The official resale platform works differently from a normal ticket website. Sellers list tickets they cannot use, buyers purchase through FIFA's system, and the ticket is transferred inside that system rather than handed over as a screenshot or a forwarded link. That transfer step is what makes the ticket valid: a ticket that has not been transferred through the official system may not be recognised at the gate, even if the seller genuinely owns it.

Resale rules also differ by country, and this matters in a three-country tournament. In Mexico, resale is restricted to the original price or lower under local regulations, while in the United States and Canada sellers on the official platform can list above face value. That difference means the same match can have very different resale prices depending on the host country, so compare carefully and do not assume a price you saw for a Mexican match applies to a United States match.

Understand the difference between a transfer and a guest ticket before you accept anything from another fan. A transferred ticket changes ownership completely, and the new owner can then resell it, while a guest ticket is tied to the original applicant attending the match and cannot be resold or re-transferred by the guest. If someone offers you a guest ticket for a match they are not attending, that ticket may not get you in.

Household limits are another trap. FIFA's terms limit the number of tickets per household per match and across the whole tournament, and only one match per day is allowed per account. These rules exist to stop bulk buying, but they also mean that a group of friends should plan who buys what in advance, rather than one person trying to buy everything and hitting a limit at checkout. If you are buying for a group, agree in advance who buys which match, keep one person as the main applicant for each match, and keep a shared note of who holds which tickets so nobody buys twice or hits a household limit at checkout.

Scams are the biggest resale danger. Never pay for tickets by wire transfer, gift cards, cryptocurrency or a payment app to a stranger, and never buy from a seller who refuses to transfer through the official system. Screenshots of tickets, QR codes sent by message, and promises of a ticket on matchday outside the stadium are all classic fraud patterns, and thousands of fans have been turned away at major tournaments with convincing fakes.

Timing matters too. Resale availability changes as the tournament approaches: some fans list tickets when their plans change, and last-minute sales windows can open close to matchday. Set up alerts on the official ticketing channels, check regularly rather than panic-buying the first listing you see, and keep a fan festival day as your fallback so a missed resale window does not ruin the trip.

Before you pay for any resale ticket, run through a short checklist. Is the seller using the official resale platform? Has the ticket been transferred to your account in FIFA's system? Does the match, date and venue on the transferred ticket match the official schedule? Have you paid through a secure platform with buyer protection? If any answer is no, walk away, however good the price looks.
